6. Long Response
A few of the many potential problems with building a physical wall along the border of the US and Mexico are the cost of it and how that would affect the economy and the negative impacts it would have on the environment. It could cause lots of damage to the surrounding areas, such as flooding, destruction of habitats, and further endangering already endangered species. The wall also brings up ethical issues. Many people think it is "offensive" and morally wrong to close off the borders of our country with a physical concrete wall. There are many economical effects the wall would bring. For one it would cost between 12 and 15 billion dollars to complete the project. Trump is planning on raising tariffs on goods from Mexico, and wants the government to spend the citizens' tax dollars to finish the project. Trump wants to build the wall in the first place to stop immigrants from illegally coming into the US from Mexico. He doesn't think security / border patrol are doing a well enough job. He blames a lot of crime on immigrants and thinks they don't believe they belong in America (even though we all immigrants ourselves???). A wall would impact my life because it's a family tradition of my family to go on trips to Big Bend NP for New Years. It would break my heart to see a wall in place of the gorgeous landscapes next time I went down there. It's one of my favorite places on earth, and it would negatively impact that region so much. I think building a wall is an absurd idea. It's not like the American image to close off our borders like that. It's honestly very unrealistic to build one for many reasons. The landforms like mountains and canyons that form some of the border would make it very hard, if not impossible, to build a wall. The wall would cause economic and environmental grief. It would also further impede America's diplomatic relations with Mexico. I think building stronger fencing in some areas is completely necessary. I don't think building a complete barrier is necessary or will go through. I know that he will find some unpopular way to enforce border security, but I don't think his "big, beautiful wall" idea will go through. If a wall was to be built it makes sense that citizens would be paying for it with our tax dollars. I think it's a terrible way to spend tax dollars, but it's what our government would do.
