This photo is cropped so the main focus is on the statue. You can also see all the smoke in the background, but you know the focus is supposed to be on the statue.
This photo is cropped to show the wreckage of the building as well as the buildings in the background. The way this photo is set up makes it so that the crumbling building isn't thrown in your face.
